As many of you may already know, Creased Cards is based in Brighton and is considered the “unofficial gay capital of the UK”
This means we love celebrating Brighton Pride & include a lot of LGBTQ cards within our huge selection of cards in our Brighton Store & online.
For those who don’t know, Pride began on 1st July 1972, which was the closest Saturday to the Stonewall riots of 1969.
London Pride began as a UK Gay Pride Rally which had 2,000 attendees. As time went along, more people attended these yearly rallies.
During this time Gay Pride made the transformation to LGBT pride in 1996. By this time, the events were seeing attendances as high as 100,000.
In 2004 the Pride London was formed and that is what built the current pride events we see today.
In 2019 there were as many as 1.5 million attendees to the London Pride showing the massive growth and impact the pride movement has made over the last 50 years.
Along with the impact, pride has made came the very well known “rainbow flag” is a symbol of the LGBTQ movements and is known worldwide.
There are many different variations of the Pride flag with different meanings, but the traditional flag which is the most well-known variation is shown below.
The original version of the pride flag originally included 8 different colours but after years of change, the final version is seen above.
The original design assigned meanings to each colour and according to the estate of the original creator, Gilbert Baker, the pink was for sex, red for life, orange for healing, yellow for sunlight, green for nature, turquoise for magic, indigo for harmony and violet for spirit.
We see this flag everywhere during Pride month and it is included on a selection of LGBTQ cards here at Creased cards. Here are a couple of the cards which include the symbolic flag.
This lovely pride related card is from our local designer ‘I Drew This’. She designs a variety of Brighton cards along with the current banners that are hung above the main shopping road in Brighton ‘North Street. (See below for image)
Pride in Brighton is a huge event, being one of the biggest in the UK. In 2018 over 400,000 people flooded our hometown to be part of the Pride events.
Last year saw the biggest ever Pride march in Brighton along with the massive Pride festival which takes place in Preston Park each year.
Last year saw Britney spears perform to over 45,000 in the park. This year is set to be just as big, if not bigger this year with Kylie Minogue being the headline act at this year’s festival.
